On The Other Side
This mountain has a darkness seen only in dreams
And a pull downward not even trees can resist,
All paths disappear, the sky seeps away, the hiker
Becomes heavy, clambering over time-charred
Branchless giants fallen hemlocks pointing down.
The bears of this mountain are enchanted too
They do not hunt honey or barberries but wait like
Buddhas for those who leave the campfires and cabins
To climb long hours in the falling dark,
Who come finally to wait, fierce lovers in dream skins,
Sitting on the flat-topped rock, smiling into the teeth
That flash like falling stars.
